Alaska Sled Dog Racing Association Staging Area and Trails

Dog Mushers get squeezed.

Construction of the Bragaw/Abbott Loop Extension forced the Alaska Sled Dog & Racing Association (ASDRA) to find a new location to start races and they had to reroute their trails. At the same time, the Municipality expressed an interest in buying the traditional start area, Tozier Track. This has led to a land trade that is still unsettled. The general idea is that the mushers would get 10-20 acres in the "PLI" land along the north border of the park. That's land the looks like parkland now, but is available for building and for the Boniface/E. 48th Street extensions.

In 2006, ASDRA is using an area that had been cleared many years ago just south of the electric substation on Tudor. The land had trees 4-6 feet tall. More long term proposals are for an area that is just south of that spot or the land that is now used for storage by the State of Alaska DOT. The DOT area is land under the control of the Alaska National Guard that is mentioned as far back as the 1974 Park plan as land that should be added to the Park. The DOT land is already cleared and has a road to it.

The pictures here show the snug fit in the temporary location. These were taken during the ExxonMobil races February 4, 2006. Park users should appreciate ASDRA's attempt to minimize the impact on the Park. As the Park has shrunk, this group has faced big disruptions with lots of patience and sensitivity to other Park users.
